The name of the university was derived from the ancient Takshashila University. This ancient university was located in the city of Taxila near the banks of the Indus river. According to the Ramayan, Taxila city was founded by Bharat, the son of kaikeyi and younger stepbrother of Ram. Along with Nalanda, Taxila was one of the seats of higher learning in ancient India.
